Medigap (a.k.a. Medicare Supplement Health Insurance) is an extra, privately offered, individual health insurance policy that helps pay for out-of-pocket costs associated with Original Medicare. You must be enrolled in Part A and Part B.
Medigap plans can help pay for:
- Copayments
- Coinsurance
- Deductibles
- Some services that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like medical care when you travel outside the U.S.
- About 20 percent of the Medicare expenses that Original Medicare does not cover
Medigap does not cover:
- Non-skilled long-term care
- Vision or dental care
- Eyeglasses or hearing aids
- Private duty nurses
Medigap Open Enrollment Period is a one-time event during the six months beginning the month you have active Medicare Part B and you’re 65 or older.It does not repeat every year like Medicare. You cannot be denied enrollment due to pre-existing health conditions.
