For the first time in its history, Medicare is paying for an over-the-counter, at-home test. Americans with Medicare Part B coverage, including those with Medicare Advantage plans, can now obtain up to eight FDA-approved COVID-19 tests each calendar month at no cost. Simply go to any participating supplier in your area with proof of Medicare enrollment.
The program became effective with the Biden administration announcement on April 4, 2022, and continues until the COVID-19 public health emergency ends.
According to HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra, the initiative builds on the strategy of expanding the accessibility of at-home, easy-to-use testing for those who may be at high risk from the virus. As a reminder, all Americans, regardless of age or insurance status, can also order up to two sets of four free at-home tests per household through the US Postal Service at COVID.gov/tests.
National chains participating in the program include Costco, CVS, Stop & Shop and Walgreens. Any provider or supplier enrolled in Medicare and offering clinical, ambulatory healthcare services (such as preventative vaccines, lab tests and COVID-19 testing) is eligible. Check with your pharmacy or provider to ensure they are participating.
