CELEBRATE AMERICAN HEART MONTH
Tips and Resources to Show Your Heart Some Love**
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, and it’s largely preventable. So this month, focus on taking small heart-healthy steps for big positive impacts on your life — now and into your senior years. Here are some ideas:
- Move your body! You don’t need to run a marathon or commit to a gym. Any amount of regular, moderate activity is good for your heart.
- Mix it up and add extra fruits and vegetables to your diet! Take advantage of online recipes and explore the range of markets in our area to try something new that adds more fiber, vitamins and minerals to your diet.
- Get enough sleep! Aim for at least seven hours a night by reducing caffeine intake, exercising at least two hours before bedtime, and minimizing artificial light sources in your room.
- Know your risk factors and visit your doctor. Have a health professional check your blood pressure and cholesterol, monitor your heart and review your history.
- Stop smoking for immediate benefits! Call 1–800–QUIT–NOW or visit smokefree.gov to get support.
- Log it! Some people stick to a program better by keeping a record of their activities and results. Check out these high- and low-tech options to stay focused.
- My Heart Tracker lets you write down your key heart stats over time (weight, BMI, blood pressure, cholesterol, etc.) Download here.
- Wearables like Fitbit, Oura Ring and Apple watches can monitor a range of activities and health data. With a wide range in price and capabilities, there is a product for every budget and level of tech savviness.
