If you are a Medicare subscriber who has planned a trip abroad, we want you to spend your vacation enjoying the sights, sounds and flavors of your international destination — not worrying about medical emergencies!
So, please be aware that in most cases Medicare coverage does not extend to foreign countries. Healthcare costs incurred out of the United States would be the responsibility of the patient. Read here for specifics.
You have options to protect yourself and your family against unexpected hospital, doctor and/or emergency transportation bills outside the country:
- Trip insurance is offered by airlines, credit cards, tour companies and private insurers. Policies are written and priced based on your specific destinations and the duration of your trip. In fact, some countries have been requiring foreigners to purchase special COVID policies before arriving.
- Certain Medigap plans (offered by private insurers) provide medically necessary emergency care services beginning during the first 60 days of each trip outside the USA. Lifetime limits of $50,000 apply.
- Some Medicare Advantage plans (offered by private insurers) provide urgent care and emergency services when traveling abroad. Coverage limitations apply.
